Intercollegiate Alumni Cocktail Gathering

This event is designed to bring together interested alumni from various colleges to enjoy conversation, cocktails and appetizers. We’ll order some appetizers to share and ask attendees to donate to offset the cost of food. Cocktails will be no-host. See photos in our Harvard Cape Cod FaceBook post and PHOTO GALLERY.

Welcome

The Harvard Club of Cape Cod is an active, growing club with a long history back to 1948 that offers diverse events of interest to our membership. Each season, the Club's activities begin in September, continuing with events each month until our Annual Meeting in June, with additional activities in the summer. Each meeting features a presentation by a Harvard faculty member, by a local leader or of special interest to the community. Members of other Harvard Clubs and Shared Interest Groups are welcome to join us at Club events. Click CALENDAR above for information on events.

We have over 300 members who have been associated with Harvard College, Radcliffe College, and the graduate schools of Harvard University. We also welcome spouses of members, and parents of students and graduates to join the Club as associate members.

Members are encouraged to contribute to summer fellowship and scholarship programs in whatever amount they can afford. The summer fellowship brings one or more Harvard students to work for the summer at a Cape community service organization. The scholarship program benefits graduates of the Cape's secondary schools. We also participate in Harvard's interviewing process and book award program, and we welcome prospective students to celebrate with us as our guests at the Club's Annual Meeting.

As a participant in the HAA Global Pass program, the Harvard Club of Cape Cod welcomes members of all other participating Global Pass Clubs to attend our events.

Get Involved

We are always looking for people with ideas for Club events and who are willing to help plan them. If there is interest, please contact any of the Club officers or Executive Committee Members.

The club supports a summer fellowship program in which one or more Harvard students spend a summer on Cape Cod helping a community service organization.

Summer Fellowship 2018

Lily Lu ‘19

Lily hails from West Roxbury and will be a senior this fall, majoring in Integrative Biology. She holds student leadership roles in Science Olympiad, Harvard Museums, Harvard Ecdysis - a student journal focused on the aesthetics of science, and sings with the Noteables. Lily is applying her research, museum and science communications skills at Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.

Noah Epstein ‘21

A rising sophomore from Cambridge, Noah has enjoyed exposure to research in the marine biology lab at Tufts and to computer programming at Harvard. Noah is a sports enthusiast involved in club baseball and Ultimate Frisbee as well as the Sports Analytics Club and writes for the student journal Satire V. This summer he is working with the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, part of Mass Audubon, in the diamondback terrapin research and monitoring program.

Eva Gildea ‘21

Eva is from Weston and spends summers in Martha’s Vineyard. A rising sophomore, she is majoring in Earth and Planetary Science. Before coming to Harvard Eva spent a gap year backpacking in the Rocky Mountains and studying French and writing at Oxford. She pursues her interest in business at Harvard through the Women in Business Club,Women’s European Business Group and as a research assistant for the Dartmouth Company. Eva is working with Biodiversity Works this summer, supporting research and monitoring of shore birds, bats and otters.

Hailing from Hanson, Scout just graduated with a degree in Integrative Biology and secondary concentration in Energy and Environment. She is headed to California to serve as an Americorps volunteer focused on nutrition in schools. While at Harvard she gained research experience at the Farrell Lab and the Museum of Natural History, and hands on field experience in the Dominican Republic and Uganda. This summer she is working with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in Chatham in supporting public safety, educating about the ecological role and importance of sharks, and engaging in research.

Michael Kassabian

"My work at the Buzzards Bay Coalition was largely in the Development office where I helped to organize two major fundraisers: the Buzzards Bay Swim (a 1.2 mile open water swim in New Bedford Harbor) and the Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride (a bike ride with 100, 75, 35, and 10 mile options starting in Little Compton, RI and ending in Woods Hole, MA). I was fortunate enough to shoulder a wide array of responsibilities that encompassed the many facets of event planning."

Summer Fellowship 2015

Katharine Kirk

Katharine Kirk AB'15 of Centerville has completed her degree in Economics. This summer, prior to starting her career in advertising in Boston, she will serve as the Youth Education Coordinator at the Osterville Historical Society. Katharine will create an engaging curriculum on Osterville’s History for children and families, and will work to increase family visits to the museum.

Gregory Scalise

Gregory Scalise '18 of Brewster will be a sophomore in the fall. He has taken courses in Math, English and Classics, is the instrument manager and plays trumpet with the Harvard University Band, and is active in Harvard College Faith and Action. This summer, Greg will be working with the Brewster Conservation Trust to improve the management of key land parcels and to increase the involvement of young people in conservation in Brewster.

We look forward to organizing site visits later this summer for interested club members to learn about the Fellows' projects first-hand.

Summer Fellowship 2014

Katrina Malakhoff

In 2014, Katrina Malakhoff, AB'14, a graduate of Barnstable High School, was at Mass. Audubon in Wellfleet assisting in research and monitoring of diamondback terrapins. Her contributions were, "As part of this project, I will help conduct a mark-recapture survey of the threatened diamondback terrapins in the sanctuary. I will also compile data from the monitoring surveys and mine the 30+ years of data in order to perform statistical assessments of the protection program’s success."

President's Report - Annual Meeting June 22, 2018

STATE OF THE CLUB

I’d like to give you a few details on the STATE OF THE CLUB, as of June 2018. We now have 358 active members, the highest number in our history. Membership continues to grow, month-over-month. We now have at least one event every month, even throughout the summer. Among the noteworthy speakers we have hosted this year are former Harvard President and US Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers, and HBS Professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter, as well as Dr. Timothy Verdun, Fellow of the Harvard Renaissance Studies Program in Florence, and Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Cape Symphony Orchestra.

Among the speakers we have confirmed for the coming year are Donna Hicks, who is affiliated with the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, who will be our guest on July 20, and former U.S. Senator Paul Kirk, who will speak on “U.S. Politics 2018 and Beyond” on October 19. We have scheduled the annual Boston Pops concert on August 12 and have planned our holiday party for December 11. Please plan to attend to attend all of these events.

Earlier this year, the Harvard Club of Cape Cod began sponsoring a monthly inter-collegiate cocktail and networking event which has attracted a number of younger Harvard alumni — as well as many alumni from a number of other colleges. They are joined by members of the Club’s executive committee. Please know that all Harvard Club members are welcome, so consider joining us at our next event — Thursday, July 26, at 5 p.m. We meet at The West End restaurant at the rotary near the Melody Tent in Hyannis.

Our Club’s success was made possible by you – our members – who supported the Club, our fellowship program, and our events. This year, we have awarded $15,000 in fellowships to four current Harvard students, who are spending the summer at four different non-profit organizations here on the Cape and on Martha’s Vineyard. Again, thank you for your contributions to the Club’s fellowship program. We expect to continue our fundraising efforts to support students next summer as well. Our Club’s success was also made possible by the efforts of our Executive Committee, consisting of 20 dedicated and hard-working members. In a few minutes, I will ask each of them to stand and be recognized.

So, again, thank you to everyone – to our members and to our Board. It has been my pleasure to serve as president this year. I look forward to the second year of my term.

Barbara W. Wellnitz, President
